Since it's Valentine's Day today, I thought of listing down a few things a single gal like me might need reminding of if and when the day comes I find myself a Twin Popsie. Why is this necessary, you ask? Because sometimes we all get touched in the head when in love~. So, below, a rough guide of do's and dont's when in a relationship (note, however, this was culled from my very limited experience):
Enrich yourself
You can only be engaged in your partner's life and your relationship to a limited degree. When things go awry, what's gonna happen then?
Don't settle for mush
Sure, the baby talk can be cute, but it also gets old. Anything else you have in common besides cheesiness certainly helps forge a stronger bond.
Grow together
By this I mean pursue each of your own passions, and try to support and take part in each other's activities one way or another. Hindi 'yung wala kayong paki.
Always keep an open mind
Communication without judgment makes the world a better place. Be accepting and understanding as well; no need to "fix" people or force them into doing anything they're not ready to.
Be honest—with your partner
Mystery is exciting, but nobody enjoys wading through crap. Wouldn't things be so much easier if we're all straightforward with our needs and wants?
Be brutally honest—with yourself
You don't have to say or do things you're not comfortable to. And don't put up with bullshit; emotional and mental abuse can break you down worse than a punch in the face.
If this is a romcom, kill the director
It ain't gonna be a walk in the park, and you don't always have to "argue" to make the relationship interesting, either.
Be candid
But know when to take things seriously.
Set limits
Like not sharing passwords or not being together 24/7 365. Sometimes you have to recognize when selfishness is simply under the guise of love and concern.
I could list more, but I think it all boils down to manners. And the Golden Rule. This list of Ten Virtues for the Modern Age by Alain de Botton hits the spot, too, though it applies to any type of relationship. Anything else I didn't cover?
